What is AEO? How service businesses show up in ChatGPT & AI Overviews
AI tools like ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews answer questions before people click. Answer engine optimisation helps your service business become one of those trusted answers. Here is how to start.

TL;DR
AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) is about becoming the answer that AI tools like ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews quote, not just a link in a list.
There is no secret AEO setting. AI answers are built on the same clear, trustworthy content that good SEO has always rewarded.
Service businesses have a natural edge, because specific, expert, local answers are exactly what these tools look for.
You can influence whether you get cited, but no one can guarantee placement in an AI answer.
Start with clear answers, clean structure, real trust signals, and a fast, current website.
What AEO actually means (and how it differs from SEO)
Answer engine optimisation, or AEO, is the practice of shaping your website so AI-powered answer engines can understand it, trust it, and use it in their responses. Think of ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, and similar tools that reply with a written answer instead of a plain list of links.
Here is the simplest way to hold the difference in your head. Traditional SEO aims to get your page ranked in a list of links, so a person can click through. AEO works to get your business named or quoted inside the answer itself, often before anyone clicks anything.
The two are not rivals. AEO builds on good SEO rather than replacing it. If your content is already clear, helpful, and trustworthy, you have most of the foundations in place.
How AI assistants decide which sources to trust
It helps to know what these systems are actually looking for. Three things matter most.
Clear, well-structured content. AI tools favour pages that answer a question directly and are easy to parse, with sensible headings, short paragraphs, and lists where they fit.
Signals of real expertise and trust. A real business, a named author, consistent contact details, and genuine reviews all help a system judge whether you are a credible source.
Content it can reach and rely on. Pages need to be crawlable, reasonably fast, and kept up to date. Stale or hidden content is easy to overlook.
It is worth clearing up one myth. Google states plainly that there is no special markup or separate index for its AI features, and that the same fundamentals that help in normal Search also help in AI Overviews and AI Mode. You can read Google's own guidance on this, along with its notes on AI features and your website.
On the ChatGPT side, OpenAI has confirmed that its search feature links out to the sources behind an answer, with a citations panel next to the response. You can read OpenAI's announcement for the details. In other words, being a clear, citable source is the goal.
Why service businesses have a real advantage
If you run a service business, this shift is good news. AI answers reward specific, expert, and often local information, which is exactly what you have. A plumber, a law firm, a clinic, or a design studio can answer real customer questions with a level of detail that thin, generic content cannot match.
There is a cost to sitting still, though. If a potential customer asks an AI assistant for the best option in your area and a competitor has published the clearer answer, that competitor becomes the default recommendation. The businesses that write helpful answers now are the ones these tools will lean on later.
Six practical steps to make your site AEO ready
You do not need a technical background to make real progress. Start here.
1. Answer real questions directly
Write down the questions your customers actually ask, then answer each one plainly in the first line or two before adding detail.
2. Structure content with clear headings and lists
Use descriptive headings, short paragraphs, and bulleted or numbered lists. Clean structure helps both people and machines follow your point.
3. Use structured data (schema) to help machines understand you
Structured data, or schema, labels what each part of your page actually is, so search and AI systems can understand your content and how it fits together. Google uses it to understand your pages and classify your content, and it keeps you eligible for rich results, so it is a genuine help, even if it is not strictly required to appear in AI answers. If you build on Framer or Webflow, both let you add it without hand-coding.
4. Strengthen your trust signals
Show who you are. A clear about page, named authors, real reviews, and consistent business details all build the credibility these systems weigh up.
5. Keep the site fast, accessible and crawlable
A quick, accessible website that search engines can read easily is simply easier to trust and use. This is standard practice for the sites we build in Framer and Webflow.
6. Keep your information current
Update key pages, prices, and answers as things change. Fresh, accurate content is easier for any system to rely on.
What about llms.txt?
You may have heard of llms.txt, a proposed file that provides AI tools with a tidy, plain-text map of your most important pages. Adoption is growing and it is cheap to add, so it can be sensible future-proofing. Be realistic, though: the major AI engines have not committed to using it, Google has said it does not rely on it, and there is little hard evidence so far that it improves visibility. Treat it as a low-cost extra, not a shortcut, and put your effort into clear content, structure, and trust first.
What you can and cannot control
You can control the quality, clarity, structure, and trustworthiness of your content. You cannot control exactly when or how an AI tool quotes you, and anyone promising guaranteed placement in ChatGPT or Google AI Overviews is overselling. The realistic goal is to become one of the clearest, most trustworthy answers in your field, then let that work in your favour over time.
How to tell if it is working
Good news: the tools are catching up, so you can watch several signals together.
Google Search Console is starting to surface AI-related results, so keep an eye on your impressions and clicks there.
Framer Analytics and Webflow Analytics can show referral traffic arriving from AI assistants.
Google Analytics can also be set up to track AI referral sources.
Spot checks: test relevant questions in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews to see whether your business gets mentioned.
New enquiries that say they found you through an AI answer are the clearest sign of all.
Together, these paint a useful picture of your visibility.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No. AEO builds on SEO. The same clear, trustworthy, well structured content supports both, so it is not a case of choosing one.
Do I need to add schema markup myself?
Adding schema is genuinely worth it, because it helps search and AI systems understand your pages, even though it is not strictly required to appear in AI answers. You do not need to hand code it: on Framer and Webflow it can be added without touching code, and we can set it up for you.
Can you guarantee my business appears in ChatGPT or AI Overviews?
No, and you should be wary of anyone who does. We can make your content far more likely to be understood and cited, but placement in an AI answer is never guaranteed.
How is AEO different for a small service business versus a big brand?
Smaller service businesses can win with depth and specificity. Clear, expert answers to real local questions often outperform broad, generic content from a larger brand.
How long before I see results?
There is no fixed timeline. As with SEO, this is a steady build rather than an overnight change, and consistency is what pays off.
